Twenty minutes from downtown Atlanta, there’s a neighborhood no travel guide mentions. One square mile. The whole world inside it.
Clarkston, Georgia is the most diverse place in America — and almost nobody outside Atlanta knows it exists.
In the 1990s, the U.S. government began resettling refugees here — from Somalia, Myanmar, Bhutan, Sudan, Ethiopia. They came with almost nothing. And they built. Restaurants, gardens, businesses, murals. They put their culture on the walls before they could afford to put it on a menu.
I spent a day inside it with Joe from Friends of Refugees — someone who knows every family, every story, every door on this street.
We visit Al Chef Restaurant, where a father and son serve East African food the way it was always meant to be eaten: communal, shared, a cultural practice — not a transaction.
We seek out a Middle Eastern shawarma spot whose closed door told a better story than any meal could.
We visit Kathmandu Kitchen, where I eat Nepali food for the first time.
This is what the Atlanta neighborhoods guides don’t show you. The skyline isn’t the story. The people underneath it are.
