This short film — The Secret Is Samaná: America’s Lost Black Community” — tells the remarkable story of the Samaná American community, told through the lens of Bethel AME Church, one of the most enduring institutions in the region of the Dominican Republic. The film explores how free Black Americans who migrated to Samaná in 1824 and preserved their faith, music, and surnames for over 200 years.
